4 September 2012 – Coastal Meandering in Hermanus

Coastal path along the Mossel River in Hermanus, South Africa

S34°24.475 E19°16.365

This cache situated along the coastal path, commemorates two whales that had died in this area, near the mouth of the Mossel River.

The eastern side of the Mossel River was originally surveyed in 1893, and eventually developed into a village.  This village, later became known as Voëlklip, and was awarded its own town council in 1925, before finally being amalgamated into Hermanus in 1940.

This cache is located within a rocky outcrop along the Hermanus coastal path, that, depending on your angle, resembles anything from a troll to a cactus.

We were lucky to arrive at low tide, as it seems the safer time to make your approach to this rather difficult to reach cache, especially if you are a vertically challenged cacher, such as Brunette Suikerbossie… However, we still regard ourselves fortunate not to lose a tooth, nail or other vital organ climbing up to grab it.

Enjoyed this one!
