3 September 2012 – Bill le Barrow’s View

Rotary Way near the Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus, South Africa

S34°24.519 E19°14.035

Bill le Barrow was born in East London in 1913.  He joined the merchant navy and had a devastating accident while in Colombo.  Though severely handicapped Bill led an active life.  He signed up during the Second World War and was probably the only serving officer with a smashed spine!  Following the war, he and his family settled in Hermanus where he joined a local accounting firm and got involved in several community projects.

In the 1960’s, he was part of a group of people involved in the set-up of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, determining the actual boundaries of the reserve, including the area around what we know today as Rotary Way.
